Abstract

Seaweed farming is an important source of livelihood for coastal communities on Salemo Island; however, conventional drying practices remain constrained by limited drying space, contamination from dust and dirt, unpredictable rainfall, strong winds, and animal disturbances. This community service program aimed to empower the Reski Bersama seaweed farmer-fisher group through the application of a polycarbonate- and solar panel-based Balla Pangalloang drying house, accompanied by training in business management, marketing, and financial management. The program was implemented through preparation, socialization, technical training, managerial training, continuous mentoring, and evaluation. The Balla Pangalloang was equipped with a solar power system and supporting components to improve the drying process and product hygiene. The results showed that approximately 450 kg of seaweed could be dried within five days, about two days faster than conventional open-air drying. The drying system also improved product cleanliness by protecting seaweed from dust, dirt, rainfall, and animal interference. In addition, the partners demonstrated improved skills in production, business management, marketing, and financial administration. The program contributed to increased productivity, better product quality, improved business capacity, and higher partner income. In conclusion, the implementation of a polycarbonate- and solar panel-based Balla Pangalloang represents an appropriate community-based technological innovation for strengthening seaweed processing efficiency and supporting the economic empowerment of coastal communities on Salemo Island.
